House of Salt and Sorrows Kartoniert. von Craig, Erin A.

House of Salt and Sorrows

Annaleigh used to be one of twelve sisters, now she’s one of eight. One girl fell off a ladder, one caught the plague, one drowned in the bathtub and one was found at the bottom of a cliff. Now rumors are starting, people are saying that Annaleigh’s family is cursed by the gods… Because why else would her sisters keep dying? Soon after the fourth sister’s death, Annaleigh begins seeing things - disturbing things - and starts questioning everything.

Is her family really cursed or could it be that some of the deaths weren't accidental?

I was incredibly pumped to read this book because it checks so many of my boxes - ghosts, mystery, a manor by the seaside, strange gods, waifish sisters and all of that packed into a fairy tale retelling. Yes! I really enjoyed most of this book and, seeing as this is Craig’s debut novel, I’m really excited to see what she writes next! "House of Salt and Sorrows" was incredibly gripping (seriously, I had trouble putting it down) and I was very intrigued by the mystery aspect.

But while I flew through this, it also had a few flaws in my opinion. As you can tell from my list of what intrigued me about this book, it’s pretty packed. Because of all that’s happening, there’s not really a lot of room for world or atmosphere building which I thought was a shame. I enjoyed most aspects of the story but I would have liked it to feel a little less rushed in places. The typical YA romance element also really caught me off guard. I mean I knew that this book was going to be a YA novel but because the rest of it was so imaginative, the cookie cutter “cute but mysterious stranger” thing had me a bit disappointed…

All in all though, this was a very enjoyable and at times truly creepy read!
